Hoke County Theme Song
Here's a modest proposal for the Fab-5. Adopt this tune to celebrate the chronic water outages plaguing residents and commemorate your keen inability to plan.
Fifty-five years ago a tune by the Guess Who hit the charts. Change a lyric or two and it’s an ideal anthem the Hoke County Commission should adopt. Play it before every meeting, halftime at football games, open next year’s fall festival with it and people will be dancing in the streets. By this time next year a Grammy will be collecting dust in that fancy new pool’s trophy case.
Here are the new lyrics (sung to “No Sugar Tonight”), proposed by an anonymous Hoke County resident waiting for water to come back on in Rockfish.
Lonely feeling, deep inside
Find a corner, where I can hide
Silent commission, ignoring me
Sudden darkness, and I can’t pee
No water tonight in my coffee
No water tonight in my tea
No water to flush behind me
No water to shower me
In the silence, of this bind
Quiet leaking, they can’t find
Lame excuses, growing fees
Now I’m prayin’, on my knees
No water tonight in my coffee
No water tonight in my tea
No water to flush behind me
No water to shower me
Dumb-de-dumb, dumb-de-dumb-de-dumber
Dumb-de-dumb, who voted for thee
Dumb-de-dumb, dumb-de-dumb-de-dumber
Call a plumber, for Hoke Counteeeeee
Younger readers may need to listen to the original tune a few times to see how well the words fit the rhythm. Here’s a link to the audio track on YouTube.
I bet that sticks in your head all day.
